One of the most influential of international designers was American craft-person, George Nakashima. Born in Spokane, Washington, in 1905, he grew up surrounded by towering trees which became the foundation for his creativity. Nakashima’s classic, streamlined designs and his approach to construction have ensured a lasting worldwide appreciation of his work. As one of the America’s foremost craftspeople, he designed furniture for Knoll, Widdicomb-Mueller and received commissions from Nelson Rockefeller.
Rare-Era is privileged to offer to their distinguished bidding clientele three, classic Nakashima designs from a single owner collector who purchased directly from the artist at his studio in New Hope, PA.
These will be offered at auction Sunday, July 16th , 2017 at 2:00pm EDT.
Formally trained in architecture, George Nakashima traveled the world, spending time in France, India and Japan where he studied and worked, absorbing global influences which were combined with his own formal training and vernacular based around the soul of the tree. Nakashima’s objective in creating his furniture was to find a relationship with the spirit of the tree. To this end he collected wood - amassing one of the largest collections in the world - and patiently waited for the spirit of the tree to dictate the form that would follow. Each of his pieces exhibit an individuality which is seen in expressive woodgrain, raw edges and colors unique to the host tree. He believed that with careful consideration of furniture construction, he could allow the spirit of the wood to be rejuvenated, perhaps forever if properly cared for.
Never out of style, Nakashima’s popularity as a crafts-person has continued to surge based on his exceptional design aesthetic and commitment to craftsmanship. With interest in mid-century design continuing to flourish, furniture by Nakashima has seen a sharp increase internationally in exhibition, scholarship, and market values. We are delighted to offer this suite of his furniture at auction and be a small piece of the partnership first created by Nakashima and the soul of a tree.
Nakashima held there was a partnership between himself and a tree, believing it was his calling to find the “perfect usage” of each piece of wood. This privileged partnership was transferred to the owners of the pieces he created.
